Efficiency Smart Partnership to Benefit City of Painesville’s Electric Customers
/media-room/efficiency-smart-partnership-to-benefit-city-of-painesville-s-electric-customers
The City of Painesville is excited to introduce a partnership with Efficiency Smart to provide energy efficiency services for Painesville Municipal Electric customers. Efficiency Smart offers several services and financial incentives designed to help residents and businesses reduce their electric use and save money.
Painesville is expected to save approximately 2,641 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy over the course of its three-year contract period. The 2,641 MWh savings is roughly equivalent to the annual electric usage of 326 homes. In addition, Painesville is expected to reduce its summer peak by 935 kilowatts (kW). Peaks occur when electric use is at its highest, typically weekday afternoons in the summer. Reducing both electric usage and summer peak lowers costs for the City of Painesville and its electric customers.
“Our goal is to help our customers lower their electric bills,” said Monica Irelan Dupee, Painesville City Manager. “We’re a public utility, meaning we are not for profit. We charge customers what it takes for us to run our system. The most effective way we can help our community save on their electric bills is through energy efficiency education and services. It’s a win for our customers, a win for our electrical system, and a win for our environment.”
Efficiency Smart’s residential services include a comprehensive set of initiatives that promote sustainable efficient product use and increase energy efficiency in homes. Residential initiatives include discounts on energy-efficient lighting, rebates for energy saving appliances, and guidance on reducing electric use.
By taking advantage of these options, residents can reduce their energy consumption and save on their electric bills. For example, a resident who:
- Installs 10 LEDs can save approximately $40 annually
- Recycles an older refrigerator could save up to $150 in annual electric costs
- Manages their electric usage with an advanced thermostat could save approximately $70 in annual electric costs
Business customers also have many ways to save energy and money. Efficiency Smart offers hands-on support, including technical assistance and financial incentives to encourage the installation of energy-efficient technologies. Example projects include lighting, compressed air and HVAC.
“We are excited for the opportunity to partner with the City of Painesville,” said Sean Clement, Director of Operations for Efficiency Smart. “The city has shown a commitment to energy efficiency, which is a very cost-effective way for communities to reduce their customers’ electric bills, reduce power supply costs, and contribute to local economic development. We look forward to working together with the city to ensure a successful partnership.”
For more information about the energy efficiency services available for Painesville Municipal Electric visit www.efficiencysmart.org/painesville-ohio or call 877-889-3777.

Energy Efficiency Tips for the Spring and Summer
/media-room/energy-efficiency-tips-for-the-spring-and-summer
Energy Efficiency Tips for the Spring and Summer
Efficiency Smart offers the following tips that can increase your home’s comfort in the warmer months while also saving you energy and money.
- Simple savings: The easiest way to save energy is to turn off lights, appliances
and electronicsnot in use. Use an advanced power strip to control multiple appliances at once. - Seal air leaks and gaps: Caulking and weatherstripping your home are two cost-effective air-sealing techniques that can offer a quick return on your investment. Sealing can help keep conditioned air from leaking out.
- Check your water heater: Reduce your water heater to a safe and comfortable temperature to save energy and money. Although some manufacturers set water heater thermostats at 140 degrees, you can reduce this to 130 degrees.
- Take in the breeze: Open windows during milder spring temperatures and during cooler summer nights. This can help naturally cool your home without having to switch on your air conditioner. Just remember to shut the windows if you need to use air conditioning.
- Light your home efficiently: Use natural light in your home when possible. When lights are needed, consider using ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs instead of incandescent lights. Only 10 to 15 percent of electricity consumed by incandescent bulbs results in
light , the rest produces heat and will make your air conditioner work harder. - Save on air conditioning: Raise the temperature on your thermostat when you’re away from home for more than a couple hours to save on cooling
costs, or consider purchasing an advanced thermostat that can automatically adjust the temperature based on outside weather conditions and your schedule. - Be a fan of fans: Reduce your air conditioning costs while keeping the same level of comfort by using your ceiling fan and raising the thermostat around four degrees. Make sure to turn off the ceiling fans when you leave, as fans cool people, not rooms.
- Watch your savings bloom: If it is time to replace your existing appliances, consider purchasing ENERGY STAR certified products to save on energy costs. Efficiency Smart offers rebates on qualified products to help
participating customers save evenmore more . - Spring clean
around your home: Cut your energy costs by getting better performance from your appliances. Clean dust from under your fridge and any exposed coils at the back. Clear lint from the exhaust hose and the filter of your clothes dryer. Dust bathroom ceiling fan covers and fan blades. Take a look outside for any accessible exterior vents and clear them of any dust, webs, leaves or lint. Change your air filter, as a clogged air filter will make your system work harder to cool your home. Make sure your air vents are not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes so your home can be cooled efficiently

Six Ways Restaurants Can Reduce Energy Expenses
Energy efficiency provides restaurants an opportunity to reduce operating expenses and free up business cash flow. Even small changes—like introducing new staff protocols or adding efficient dishwashers—can add up over time. Below, Efficiency Smart Lead Engineering Consultant, Tim Stearns shares six tips restaurants can use in the kitchen, dining room, and elsewhere to manage operational expenses.
1. Set the mood with decorative LED bulbs.
Today’s LED options let restaurants retain their ambiance while saving on energy costs. For example, Edison-style bulbs, which mimic the glowing filaments of incandescent bulbs, are now easy to find at a reasonable price.
Most LED lamps and fixtures are now priced comparably to incandescent and fluorescents, meaning the payback on an upgrade is faster than ever. You’ll also avoid burning staff time on frequent bulb replacements, as LEDs last longer as well.

2. Spend less to keep products fresh.
Food is a huge expense for restaurants, and the cost to store it isn’t far behind. For example, refrigeration makes up an average of 44% of electric use in a commercial kitchen.[1]
Inefficient refrigeration isn’t just more costly—it spoils food faster, too. Regular maintenance can help keep equipment running as efficiently as possible. And, when it’s time to replace your fridge or freezer, opt for one with the ENERGY STAR logo. These units are certified to be the most energy-efficient, providing around nine percent greater efficiency than standard models.[2]

3. Take a hands-off approach to dishes.
Hot water is another big expense for restaurants. On average, water heating eats up about 10 percent of restaurants’ total energy use.[3] Low-flow pre-rinse spray valves and high-efficiency dishwashers use a fraction of the energy while saving valuable staff time compared to handwashing.
4. Improve Your HVAC.
Regarding cooking ventilation, there are a couple of ways to enable your exhaust fans to do less work to remove the same amount of air. One is to choose energy-efficient hood designs and layouts. Opt for backshelf hoods that are Underwriters Laboratory (UL)-listed and group heavy-duty appliances closest to the fans, with ovens at the ends. Turn off your hood at night or use variable-speed controllers to sense when the exhaust fan is needed. The rest of the time, the hood controllers will minimize or shut off the exhaust, yielding paybacks in as little as one to two years.[4]
When it comes to heating, cooling, and ventilating your entire restaurant space, check your rooftop unit (RTU) annually for any red flags that could indicate the system isn’t operating effectively. Consider installing RTU controllers (or, if you rent, ask your landlord to) to sense when ventilation is needed and cut back on energy use when it isn’t. Demand-controlled ventilation sensors can also sense when a restaurant is full or empty and adjust ventilation accordingly.

5. Adopt an efficiency mindset.
Make it part of your staff culture to use only what is needed. Work with managers to create schedules or checklists that encourage staff to turn off (or down) lights, idle equipment, and limit water usage.
Keep an eye on other things at your restaurant that use energy. For instance, cooking equipment makes up about a fifth of a restaurant’s electricity use. Ovens, fryers, broilers, and burners all use a substantial amount of energy, so opt for ENERGY STAR-certified appliances that will save money year after year.
6. Make time for maintenance.
Set up regular cleanings and tune-ups for key equipment to keep things running smoothly and catch any issues before they become emergencies. Beware of band-aid solutions that mask a problem instead of fixing it.
Waiting for repairs can lead to inopportune equipment failure. It may also limit your options to replace the equipment with something more energy efficient, which would have saved you more money in the long run.

Energy Efficiency for Grocery Stores
Most grocery stores can save significantly on energy costs by retrofitting their systems or upgrading to new, more energy-efficient equipment. Energy efficiency upgrades can run the gamut from a low-cost fix to a major equipment upgrade.
Below is some guidance on the most common energy efficiency projects for grocery stores, beginning with the simplest—maintenance—and moving through lighting, refrigeration, and more.
Double down on maintenance
The tried-and-true method for improving a grocery store’s energy efficiency is also generally the cheapest method: doubling down on maintenance.
Replace the seals on refrigerators and freezers every five years or so, and repair cracks or gaps as needed. Have someone get up on the roof annually to make sure that air intakes are free of debris.
Check filters and refrigerant levels annually, too. If you are needing to refill refrigerant levels often, find out where the system is leaking fluid. The price of older refrigerants is becoming expensive as the industry moves away from them.
“Performing regular maintenance allows you to stay on top of things before they become an emergency that requires a replacement,” said Efficiency Smart Implementation Manager, Dan Petit. “When it gets to that point, you lose your ability to plan and may have to take whatever replacement you can get.”
Often, an emergency replacement is not the most energy-efficient one. Then, you could be stuck with that piece of equipment for the next 15 to 20 years if it’s too expensive to replace.
Upgrade your lighting
Upgrading store lighting is a great way to save energy while also improving the look and feel of the store. And because LEDs last longer than fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, staff will spend less time replacing burnt-out bulbs.
Refrigerated cases are everywhere in grocery stores, so upgrading case lighting will make a big difference on energy bills—especially if the store is open for long hours. How lighting is upgraded to maximize its efficiency will depend on the store’s existing lights and layout. In some cases, stores can replace fluorescent lamp tubes with retrofit kits that fit into existing cases. This is the cheapest and easiest option.
Replacing lighting fixtures entirely will cost more but also provides more options. When upgrading to new fixtures, it’s easier to incorporate advanced lighting controls into the system. With lighting controls, store managers can tune the light levels and temperatures (cooler or warmer colored light) to meet different needs in different parts of the store. Managers can also set controls to turn lights on or off in response to motion sensors or dim them on a set schedule, such as during restocking hours or when the store is closed.
If the store is responsible for maintaining the building’s exterior, make sure to check outside wall packs, loading docks, and parking lots for efficiency opportunities. Most new fixtures come with motion sensors and dimming options. There are also a variety of LED replacement options for sign lighting, from tubes to strips, that can be customized for length and color.
What to know about lighting for your business
Fine tune the refrigeration
Refrigeration makes up about 40 percent of total energy use for most grocery stores, according to Energy STAR. If a store’s current refrigeration system wastes a lot of energy, upgrading to a new system could make a large impact on your energy costs.
Open refrigerated cases were once commonplace at grocery stores, particularly for perishable staples like eggs, cheese, and yogurt. But nowadays, most stores have added doors to their refrigerated cases. This saves energy without impacting the customer experience or purchases.
If a store’s refrigerated cases still have a lot of life left in them, door retrofit kits can be installed to keep conditioned air where it belongs. In addition to reducing energy use, these kits allow cases to maintain a more consistent temperature, which means that perishable products will maintain their quality longer.
Stores can also upgrade the evaporator fan motors that circulate cold air in their refrigerated cases. Older cases typically use permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors, which are not as efficient as newer electronically commutated motors (ECMs). It’s relatively easy to swap out PSC motors for newer ECMs.
Another retrofit that stores can install on refrigerated case doors is anti-sweat heaters. These heaters prevent condensation from forming on the doors. Anti-sweat heaters are designed to kick in at a specific humidity or case dew point and will run less often in the winter when the air is drier. Similarly, smart defrost controls will trigger a defrosting process only when needed to avoid an accumulation of frost and ice on the evaporator. Stores can also install controls on evaporator fan motors in walk-ins so that fans only run at full speed when there is a need for active cooling.
If a store is already planning to replace its refrigerated cases, it’s a good idea to purchase new cases with doors. Replacing the entire case is more expensive than a simple retrofit, but new cases come with LED lighting and high-efficiency fan motors, which adds up to greater monthly savings.
Finally, don’t forget to address the efficiency of the back end of your refrigeration system. Your refrigeration compressor or condensing unit can be found on the roof or in a dedicated compressor rack in a back storage area. Newer compressors tend to be smaller and more efficient and need less horsepower to provide the same amount of cooling.
Six signs that your refrigeration isn’t working properly
Look for Energy STAR equipment
Grocery stores that sell prepared food have ovens, steam cookers, commercial refrigerators, and other kitchen equipment on hand. When it’s time to replace the equipment, look for Energy STAR certified models.
