  • Signs It Might Be Time to Replace Your Water Heater

    /WaterHeaterSigns

How often do you think about your water heater? If you are like most people, probably infrequently when it’s working great.

However, if you suddenly find yourself with only cold water in the shower, your water heater likely jumps to the top of your mind!

While water heaters can fail without warning, there are often signs you can look for that indicate it might be time to start planning for a replacement:

    • Visible Corrosion: Check for corrosion on the water lines or on the unit itself
    • Leaks: Look for leaks from seams, joints, or seals
    • Noises and Vibrations: Listen for loud rumbling noises or vibrations, which can be red flags
    • Insufficient Hot Water: Note if you are experiencing a shortage of hot water
    • Age: Review the age of your water heater, as they start nearing the end of their lifespan after ten years of use.

If any of the above sounds like your water heater, you might want to consider replacing your unit with a heat pump water heater. Water heating is typically the third-highest energy consumer in a home, making an energy-efficient heat pump model a smart choice for a replacement.

While the initial cost may be higher than standard models, heat pump water heaters make up the difference quickly. The average family of four saves $300 annually on electric bills compared to using a standard model. Efficiency Smart offers a $300 rebate on the purchase of a new heat pump water heater and you may also qualify for additional federal tax credits.

Check out the Home Energy Rebates page or call our customer support team at 877-889-3777 for more information.

  • Laundry Room Savings

    /laundry

Doing laundry can feel like a never-ending cycle. However, you can at least save energy and money while doing it.

Here are five ways you can clean up on energy savings while doing laundry:

    1. Wash with colder water:

According to ENERGY STAR, 90 percent of a clothes washer’s energy use comes from water heating. Washing in cold water is generally as effective unless you are dealing with oily stains. Even lowering the temperature from hot to warm can reduce energy use by nearly 50 percent.

    1. Maximize Clothes Washer Load Sizes:

Clothes washers use nearly the same amount of energy regardless of the number of items being washed. Using full loads not only saves energy but also reduces the number of laundry cycles you have to complete.

    1. Clean the lint filter after every use:

Make cleaning out the lint filter part of your post-dryer routine after every load. Not only will this improve air circulation and keep your dryer operating as expected, but it’s also an important fire safety step.

    1. Use lower heat settings in the dryer.

While it may seem counterintuitive, using lower heat settings in your dryer can save energy, even if it makes your drying cycle longer. It can also protect your clothes from over-drying.

    1. Choose ENERGY STAR-certified equipment.

When it's time to upgrade your appliances, pick ENERGY STAR-certified models. ENERGY STAR-certified clothes washers use 20% less energy and 30% less water than standard models. Meanwhile, ENERGY STAR-certified clothes dryers use 20% less energy. Efficiency Smart also offers $50 rebates on both items, helping you save even more

  • Efficiency Smart Partnership to Benefit City of Painesville’s Electric Customers

    /media-room/efficiency-smart-partnership-to-benefit-city-of-painesville-s-electric-customers

The City of Painesville is excited to introduce a partnership with Efficiency Smart to provide energy efficiency services for Painesville Municipal Electric customers. Efficiency Smart offers several services and financial incentives designed to help residents and businesses reduce their electric use and save money.

Painesville is expected to save approximately 2,641 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy over the course of its three-year contract period. The 2,641 MWh savings is roughly equivalent to the annual electric usage of 326 homes. In addition, Painesville is expected to reduce its summer peak by 935 kilowatts (kW). Peaks occur when electric use is at its highest, typically weekday afternoons in the summer. Reducing both electric usage and summer peak lowers costs for the City of Painesville and its electric customers.

“Our goal is to help our customers lower their electric bills,” said Monica Irelan Dupee, Painesville City Manager. “We’re a public utility, meaning we are not for profit. We charge customers what it takes for us to run our system. The most effective way we can help our community save on their electric bills is through energy efficiency education and services. It’s a win for our customers, a win for our electrical system, and a win for our environment.”

Efficiency Smart’s residential services include a comprehensive set of initiatives that promote sustainable efficient product use and increase energy efficiency in homes. Residential initiatives include discounts on energy-efficient lighting, rebates for energy saving appliances, and guidance on reducing electric use.

By taking advantage of these options, residents can reduce their energy consumption and save on their electric bills. For example, a resident who:

    • Installs 10 LEDs can save approximately $40 annually
    • Recycles an older refrigerator could save up to $150 in annual electric costs
    • Manages their electric usage with an advanced thermostat could save approximately $70 in annual electric costs

Business customers also have many ways to save energy and money. Efficiency Smart offers hands-on support, including technical assistance and financial incentives to encourage the installation of energy-efficient technologies. Example projects include lighting, compressed air and HVAC.

“We are excited for the opportunity to partner with the City of Painesville,” said Sean Clement, Director of Operations for Efficiency Smart. “The city has shown a commitment to energy efficiency, which is a very cost-effective way for communities to reduce their customers’ electric bills, reduce power supply costs, and contribute to local economic development. We look forward to working together with the city to ensure a successful partnership.”

    • Manages their electric usage with a smart thermostat could save approximately $70 in annual electric costs

Business customers also have many ways to save energy and money. Efficiency Smart offers hands-on support, including technical assistance and financial incentives to encourage the installation of energy-efficient technologies. Example projects include lighting, compressed air and HVAC.

“We are excited for the opportunity to work with the Village of Oak Harbor,” said Sean Clement, Director of Operations for Efficiency Smart. “The village has shown a commitment to energy efficiency, which is a cost-effective way for communities to reduce their customers’ electric bills, reduce power supply costs, and contribute to local economic development. We look forward to working together with the village to ensure a successful partnership.”

Oak Harbor is expected to save approximately 259 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy over the course of its three-year contract period. The 259 MWh savings is roughly equivalent to the annual electric usage of more than 33 homes. In addition, Oak Harbor is expected to reduce its summer peak by 40 kilowatts (kW). Reducing both electric usage and summer peak lowers costs for the Village of Oak Harbor and its electric customers.

  • Spring Cleaning Energy Efficiency Check List

    /Spring

As winter makes its exit, it’s almost time to put away those heavy coats and bring out the lighter jackets.

If you're gearing up for spring cleaning, here are some tips to refresh your living space while also saving energy and money:

    • Change your filters: The change in seasons serves as a great reminder to swap out your furnace filter. A dirty filter makes your system work harder, wasting energy. If you use an air purifier, it’s also a good time to check and potentially replace this filter as well.
    • Maintain HVAC equipment: Scheduling an annual inspection and maintenance for your HVAC system is an important step to keep it running as efficiently as possible. Especially after your system worked hard to keep you comfortable in the winter.
    • Be smart about electronics: Some electronics continue to draw power even when “off.” If you’re no longer using items like heated blankets, now is a good time to unplug and store them away. Then, consider using smart power strips for electronics you use year-round. Smart power strips can detect when items are in standby mode and cut off power when not in use, saving you energy.
    • Check Your Ceiling Fans: Include ceiling fans in your spring-cleaning routine. After dusting and cleaning, adjust them to run counterclockwise. This will let you turn the thermostat up a few degrees during the warmer months while staying comfortable.

Learn more about how to use ceiling fans year-round to save energy

    • Look outside: Extend your spring cleaning to the exterior of your home. Inspect and clear accessible vents, such as those for your clothes dryer, from any blockages or accumulated dust, webs, leaves, and lint.
    • Clean out your fridge: Cleaning out those questionable leftovers in your fridge? Use this time to check if the seals around the door are airtight and replace them if not. If you have an older model, you can also consider cleaning the condenser coils. Finally, ensure that you leave a few inches between the wall and the refrigerator to allow for airflow.
    • Swap out old appliances: If it’s time to replace an appliance in your home, look for energy-efficient models. Check out our Home Energy Rebates page for a list of models that will also qualify for money back on the purchase price.

  • Energy Efficiency Tips for the Spring and Summer

    /media-room/energy-efficiency-tips-for-the-spring-and-summer

Energy Efficiency Tips for the Spring and Summer

Efficiency Smart offers the following tips that can increase your home’s comfort in the warmer months while also saving you energy and money.

    • Simple savings: The easiest way to save energy is to turn off lights, appliances and electronics not in use. Use an advanced power strip to control multiple appliances at once.
    • Seal air leaks and gaps: Caulking and weatherstripping your home are two cost-effective air-sealing techniques that can offer a quick return on your investment. Sealing can help keep conditioned air from leaking out.
    • Check your water heater: Reduce your water heater to a safe and comfortable temperature to save energy and money. Although some manufacturers set water heater thermostats at 140 degrees, you can reduce this to 130 degrees.
    • Take in the breeze: Open windows during milder spring temperatures and during cooler summer nights. This can help naturally cool your home without having to switch on your air conditioner. Just remember to shut the windows if you need to use air conditioning.
    • Light your home efficiently: Use natural light in your home when possible. When lights are needed, consider using ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs instead of incandescent lights. Only 10 to 15 percent of electricity consumed by incandescent bulbs results in light, the rest produces heat and will make your air conditioner work harder.
    • Save on air conditioning: Raise the temperature on your thermostat when you’re away from home for more than a couple hours to save on cooling costs, or consider purchasing an advanced thermostat that can automatically adjust the temperature based on outside weather conditions and your schedule.
    • Be a fan of fans: Reduce your air conditioning costs while keeping the same level of comfort by using your ceiling fan and raising the thermostat around four degrees. Make sure to turn off the ceiling fans when you leave, as fans cool people, not rooms.
    • Watch your savings bloom: If it is time to replace your existing appliances, consider purchasing ENERGY STAR certified products to save on energy costs. Efficiency Smart offers rebates on qualified products to help participating customers save even more more.
    • Spring clean around your home: Cut your energy costs by getting better performance from your appliances.  Clean dust from under your fridge and any exposed coils at the back. Clear lint from the exhaust hose and the filter of your clothes dryer. Dust bathroom ceiling fan covers and fan blades. Take a look outside for any accessible exterior vents and clear them of any dust, webs, leaves or lint. Change your air filter, as a clogged air filter will make your system work harder to cool your home. Make sure your air vents are not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes so your home can be cooled efficiently

  • Under Pressure! Tips for Minimizing Waste from Compressed Air Systems

    /compressed_air

Compressed air is energy-intensive, since most of the energy required to make it is lost as waste heat. However, it is used in many applications for manufacturers, offering businesses a great opportunity for energy and money savings by following the best practices below.

    Seal the leaks.

Even the most efficient systems will lose five to 10 percent of the air they produce to leakages. However, many systems leak several times that much.

“If you can hear a leak without an ultrasonic leak detector, it’s big enough to fix,” advises Efficiency Smart’s Eric Weber, who works with several manufacturers to minimize their energy use.

Because compressed air uses so much energy, even small leaks are generally worth fixing. You can find them using an ultrasonic leak detector, or by hiring a vendor to perform an audit.

    Lower the pressure.

Reducing the pressure in your system will also reduce your energy use. That’s because the system requires less energy to run and will leak slower. The rule of thumb here is that lowering your pressure by two psi will result in one percent savings.

Of course, it’s important to fix any big leaks before reducing the pressure, to avoid surprises. You should also know the application with the highest-pressure requirements before you go and adjust the dials.

“If you have a machine where the highest pressure needed is 100 psi, you don’t need to set your system to 125,” Weber recommends. “Try setting it just a bit higher, maybe to 105 or 110, to account for any small leaks you can’t fix. Then measure the pressure you receive and adjust as needed.”

    Optimize the system.

If your compressed air load varies with demand, you may want to consider upgrading to a variable-speed compressor that only runs at full capacity when needed.

If you have multiple compressors, link them together using your system controls. Controls help you avoid using multiple machines when just one will do the job. Or, if one of your compressors is fixed speed and the other is variable, you can set controls to efficiently match the demand as it increases and decreases, as fixed speed units are inefficient at part load.

For nozzle-based tools, look for the nozzles that are best suited to your application. The better the seal between the nozzle and the material, the less energy that will be wasted.

Finally, if your factory shuts down at the end of the day, turn off the machines when the last shift leaves. Otherwise, leaky machines may kick back on overnight, wasting energy while the building is empty.

    Watch your room temperature.

Often, compressed air machines are found in blazing-hot mechanical rooms. Compressors require an ambient temperature between 40-100 degrees to operate properly. This means maintaining proper clearance, if there are multiple machines, and providing proper ventilation.  If your machine is in an enclosed mechanical room, install a louver or damper in the outside wall, to pull in cooler outside air and keep the machine working as efficiently as possible.

You can also consider installing a heat recovery system that re-uses the waste heat from your compressed air system to heat offices or other on-site processes.

    Dry the air efficiently.

Most pneumatic tools and machinery don’t like water, so air dryers are used to remove moisture from compressed air. How they dry the air depends on a number of factors. In some cases, you may save energy by opting for a cycling refrigerated dryer or opting for advanced controls on a desiccant dryer. Reach out to Efficiency Smart for more information about your specific needs.

    Switch up your process.

Compressed air uses a lot of electricity. Many businesses find that they save the most by opting for another tool that performs the same task just as effectively, such as using a broom to clean a workspace. Consider whether any of your compressed air usage can be replaced by another, more efficient technology like battery-powered tools.

  • Four Ways Manufacturers Can Improve Energy Efficiency

    /Manufacturing

Manufacturers are as unique as the products that they make. However, they all have one thing in common: they have a variety of energy-efficient opportunities and practices that can lead to lower costs.

Below are four types of equipment commonly found in manufacturing facilities that benefit from energy-efficient processes and upgrades.

    1. Check your lighting.

Lighting provides essential safety and comfort to employees on the manufacturing floor. While metal halides and fluorescent tubes dominated the industrial lighting market for decades, LEDs are the best replacement option. These longer-lasting bulbs and fixtures improve worker visibility and reduce maintenance time. They’re also dramatically more cost-effective.

When upgrading to LEDs, keep in mind that you don’t necessarily need to match your lumen output to what is printed on your older bulbs. Instead, focus on matching (or exceeding) your current light levels. Typically, you can achieve the same light levels you had with metal halide or fluorescent lighting with lower-rated lumen LED fixtures.

For even greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness, opt for lighting that includes controls. Enabling LED sensors and dimming capabilities where possible ensure that employees use only the light they need, where and when they need it.

For businesses that inherit older facilities that weren’t designed with current manufacturing processes in mind, some spaces may be too bright while others are dim. Consider hiring a lighting designer to perform a study of your space, how you use it, and how it interacts with other elements to maximize savings and improve productivity and employee safety.

    1. Right-size HVAC schedules and equipment.

Energy requirements for industrial heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems vary widely. To save energy while maintaining comfortable temperatures in large spaces, consider replacing smaller ceiling fans with high-volume, low-velocity fans. These fans can displace more air with less effort and have the added benefit of being quieter.

For ventilation fans used in painting booths, welding rooms, and other spaces that require a specific air turnover rate, install variable frequency drives (VFDs) to save energy when ventilation needs are lower, or the equipment isn’t in use.

For structures with HVAC rooftop units, such as office buildings, replace old or failing equipment with the most efficient option that fits your budget. A more efficient system is usually more expensive but will recoup its cost—and then some—over the life of the unit. Another office space-related opportunity is to mitigate the high cooling costs of server rooms.

    1. Contain compressed air leaks.

Compressed air systems are energy intensive and can contribute significantly to energy costs—especially if they are leaky, which many are. For businesses that use compressed air for manufacturing processes, it is usually worth the time and expense to perform an air study. These studies monitor how your system uses compressed air and whether any of that air is being wasted. For example, if the business is closed on weekends and you are still seeing high air usage, your system is likely leaking air.

To get ahead of leaks and their associated costs, set up a regular leak maintenance and repair program. Once leaks have been repaired, you can focus on minimizing additional energy use related to air pressure. If you have a fixed-speed compressor but variable needs, consider installing a variable-speed air compressor. If you have multiple compressors, consider installing controls that ensure your system components aren’t working against each other and are staged in the most efficient way possible

    1. Assess product-specific applications.

Industrial energy efficiency solutions are as varied as the U.S. business landscape. Hydraulic systems that run on oil may be able to be replaced with all-electric options, while superheated processes may benefit from insulation. Dust collectors may not require as much power to perform their required tasks. Regardless of specific applications, you can improve your energy efficiency by keeping systems maintained, turned off when not necessary, and upgrading them with efficient models at the time of replacement.

  • Six Ways Restaurants Can Reduce Energy Expenses

    /Restaurants

Energy efficiency provides restaurants an opportunity to reduce operating expenses and free up business cash flow. Even small changes—like introducing new staff protocols or adding efficient dishwashers—can add up over time. Below, Efficiency Smart Lead Engineering Consultant, Tim Stearns shares six tips restaurants can use in the kitchen, dining room, and elsewhere to manage operational expenses.

    1. Set the mood with decorative LED bulbs.

Today’s LED options let restaurants retain their ambiance while saving on energy costs. For example, Edison-style bulbs, which mimic the glowing filaments of incandescent bulbs, are now easy to find at a reasonable price.

Most LED lamps and fixtures are now priced comparably to incandescent and fluorescents, meaning the payback on an upgrade is faster than ever. You’ll also avoid burning staff time on frequent bulb replacements, as LEDs last longer as well.

Learn more about LED lighting for businesses

    2. Spend less to keep products fresh.

Food is a huge expense for restaurants, and the cost to store it isn’t far behind. For example, refrigeration makes up an average of 44% of electric use in a commercial kitchen.[1]

Inefficient refrigeration isn’t just more costly—it spoils food faster, too. Regular maintenance can help keep equipment running as efficiently as possible. And, when it’s time to replace your fridge or freezer, opt for one with the ENERGY STAR logo. These units are certified to be the most energy-efficient, providing around nine percent greater efficiency than standard models.[2]

Learn more about ways to save on refrigeration

    3. Take a hands-off approach to dishes.

Hot water is another big expense for restaurants. On average, water heating eats up about 10 percent of restaurants’ total energy use.[3] Low-flow pre-rinse spray valves and high-efficiency dishwashers use a fraction of the energy while saving valuable staff time compared to handwashing.

    4. Improve Your HVAC.

Regarding cooking ventilation, there are a couple of ways to enable your exhaust fans to do less work to remove the same amount of air. One is to choose energy-efficient hood designs and layouts. Opt for backshelf hoods that are Underwriters Laboratory (UL)-listed and group heavy-duty appliances closest to the fans, with ovens at the ends. Turn off your hood at night or use variable-speed controllers to sense when the exhaust fan is needed. The rest of the time, the hood controllers will minimize or shut off the exhaust, yielding paybacks in as little as one to two years.[4]

When it comes to heating, cooling, and ventilating your entire restaurant space, check your rooftop unit (RTU) annually for any red flags that could indicate the system isn’t operating effectively. Consider installing RTU controllers (or, if you rent, ask your landlord to) to sense when ventilation is needed and cut back on energy use when it isn’t. Demand-controlled ventilation sensors can also sense when a restaurant is full or empty and adjust ventilation accordingly.

    5. Adopt an efficiency mindset.

Make it part of your staff culture to use only what is needed. Work with managers to create schedules or checklists that encourage staff to turn off (or down) lights, idle equipment, and limit water usage.

Keep an eye on other things at your restaurant that use energy. For instance, cooking equipment makes up about a fifth of a restaurant’s electricity use. Ovens, fryers, broilers, and burners all use a substantial amount of energy, so opt for ENERGY STAR-certified appliances that will save money year after year.

    6. Make time for maintenance.

Set up regular cleanings and tune-ups for key equipment to keep things running smoothly and catch any issues before they become emergencies. Beware of band-aid solutions that mask a problem instead of fixing it.

Waiting for repairs can lead to inopportune equipment failure. It may also limit your options to replace the equipment with something more energy efficient, which would have saved you more money in the long run.

  • Three Ways Schools and Universities Can Save Energy and Money

    /schools

With so many competing priorities for time and money, energy efficiency for schools and universities can easily fall by the wayside.

Fortunately, saving energy doesn’t have to be a big lift. With buildings in near-constant use and budgets relatively consistent year after year, savings are easy to predict and achieve. Those savings free up cash flow that can be used for other initiatives.

Energy efficiency isn’t solely the responsibility of facilities staff anymore, either. Students are increasingly interested in saving energy as a career path or to reduce their carbon footprints. Many schools and universities now have green teams or environmental studies groups looking to get involved in energy conservation efforts.

The bottom line for schools and universities: look for quick efficiency wins and cultivate a team of people that can help carry out energy-saving measures and activities. Below, we share three ways to save money and energy.

Lighting: Prioritize LEDs in high-use spaces

Schools and universities are bustling epicenters of activity between classes, extracurricular activities, and maintenance work. Facilities are often used seven days a week, from early morning until late at night.

“It’s not unusual to see lights on at 11 p.m. in a school building,” said Efficiency Smart energy consultant Tim Stearns. “Typically, the first one in is the head custodian at 5:30 a.m., and the lights don’t get shut off until late at night by the third shift custodial crew.”

To support all this activity, buildings must be reliably well-lit. However, not all lighting is created equal. Many buildings, even those built more recently, use fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent bulbs use more energy than LEDs and burn out more quickly, so staff spend more time purchasing and replacing bulbs, and electricity bills are higher.

Fortunately, fluorescents can easily be upgraded to tube LEDs without installing new fixtures. Doing so in a school setting can deliver a 50 percent reduction in energy use and significant cost savings, especially now that LED technology is more affordable. Stearns suggests upgrading lights in the spaces that get the most use first. Then, work your way through the remainder of the building.

    Learn more about commercial lighting.

HVAC: Make a plan for equipment failure

Maintenance is a simple step to keep HVAC equipment running more smoothly and efficiently.

Make sure that the team in charge of heating and cooling — whether that’s the facilities manager or even the business manager —has a process in place to perform and document regular maintenance activities, including swapping out filters and cleaning vents.

“Adopting a consistent maintenance plan for heating and cooling equipment can increase its longevity by years,” said Stearns.

Eventually, old equipment will fail and will need to be replaced. This is the one chance every decade or two that schools have to replace their existing equipment. There is almost always a standard-efficiency version and a high-efficiency version available that will meet your needs. Based on the lifetime costs to operate, the high-efficiency version is almost always the more cost-effective choice.

Contact your contractor and Efficiency Smart for help with selecting an energy-efficient heating and cooling replacement system that will save the school money over time. Include the equipment and installation costs in a capital needs plan and approve the plan with whoever oversees the school’s budget. Taking these steps in advance reduces the chance that the school gets stuck with whatever replacement equipment your vendor has on hand when equipment fails, which is often a standard efficiency option which costs more to operate.

Six steps for your commercial HVAC system

Behavior: Get students, teachers, and staff involved

Schools are a great place to employ a behavior campaign to reduce energy use. As teachers create lesson plans, they are well-positioned to educate students about the importance of saving energy at school. Select groups of students can also share the knowledge they gain with the rest of the student body.

Inspire staff and teachers to get creative. Art students can create posters urging people to turn off lights and equipment. Bring different groups of people together to brainstorm ways to make energy efficiency a part of your school’s culture.

For other occupants, such as those renting or using the space during community events, consider placing wall stickers near light switches or heavily used equipment to serve as a reminder to shut it off before they leave.

Finally, consider performing walkthroughs with department managers to find energy conservation measures that can be added to daily and seasonal task checklists. For example, kitchen employees can turn off ovens when not in use or empty walk-ins for the summer before turning off the refrigeration entirely.

  • Energy Efficiency for Grocery Stores

    /grocery

Most grocery stores can save significantly on energy costs by retrofitting their systems or upgrading to new, more energy-efficient equipment. Energy efficiency upgrades can run the gamut from a low-cost fix to a major equipment upgrade.

Below is some guidance on the most common energy efficiency projects for grocery stores, beginning with the simplest—maintenance—and moving through lighting, refrigeration, and more.

    Double down on maintenance

The tried-and-true method for improving a grocery store’s energy efficiency is also generally the cheapest method: doubling down on maintenance.

Replace the seals on refrigerators and freezers every five years or so, and repair cracks or gaps as needed. Have someone get up on the roof annually to make sure that air intakes are free of debris.

Check filters and refrigerant levels annually, too. If you are needing to refill refrigerant levels often, find out where the system is leaking fluid. The price of older refrigerants is becoming expensive as the industry moves away from them.

“Performing regular maintenance allows you to stay on top of things before they become an emergency that requires a replacement,” said Efficiency Smart Implementation Manager, Dan Petit. “When it gets to that point, you lose your ability to plan and may have to take whatever replacement you can get.”

Often, an emergency replacement is not the most energy-efficient one. Then, you could be stuck with that piece of equipment for the next 15 to 20 years if it’s too expensive to replace.

    Upgrade your lighting

Upgrading store lighting is a great way to save energy while also improving the look and feel of the store. And because LEDs last longer than fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, staff will spend less time replacing burnt-out bulbs.

Refrigerated cases are everywhere in grocery stores, so upgrading case lighting will make a big difference on energy bills—especially if the store is open for long hours. How lighting is upgraded to maximize its efficiency will depend on the store’s existing lights and layout. In some cases, stores can replace fluorescent lamp tubes with retrofit kits that fit into existing cases. This is the cheapest and easiest option.

Replacing lighting fixtures entirely will cost more but also provides more options. When upgrading to new fixtures, it’s easier to incorporate advanced lighting controls into the system. With lighting controls, store managers can tune the light levels and temperatures (cooler or warmer colored light) to meet different needs in different parts of the store. Managers can also set controls to turn lights on or off in response to motion sensors or dim them on a set schedule, such as during restocking hours or when the store is closed.

If the store is responsible for maintaining the building’s exterior, make sure to check outside wall packs, loading docks, and parking lots for efficiency opportunities. Most new fixtures come with motion sensors and dimming options. There are also a variety of LED replacement options for sign lighting, from tubes to strips, that can be customized for length and color.

What to know about lighting for your business

    Fine tune the refrigeration

Refrigeration makes up about 40 percent of total energy use for most grocery stores, according to Energy STAR. If a store’s current refrigeration system wastes a lot of energy, upgrading to a new system could make a large impact on your energy costs.

Open refrigerated cases were once commonplace at grocery stores, particularly for perishable staples like eggs, cheese, and yogurt. But nowadays, most stores have added doors to their refrigerated cases. This saves energy without impacting the customer experience or purchases.

If a store’s refrigerated cases still have a lot of life left in them, door retrofit kits can be installed to keep conditioned air where it belongs. In addition to reducing energy use, these kits allow cases to maintain a more consistent temperature, which means that perishable products will maintain their quality longer.

Stores can also upgrade the evaporator fan motors that circulate cold air in their refrigerated cases. Older cases typically use permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors, which are not as efficient as newer electronically commutated motors (ECMs). It’s relatively easy to swap out PSC motors for newer ECMs.

Another retrofit that stores can install on refrigerated case doors is anti-sweat heaters. These heaters prevent condensation from forming on the doors. Anti-sweat heaters are designed to kick in at a specific humidity or case dew point and will run less often in the winter when the air is drier. Similarly, smart defrost controls will trigger a defrosting process only when needed to avoid an accumulation of frost and ice on the evaporator. Stores can also install controls on evaporator fan motors in walk-ins so that fans only run at full speed when there is a need for active cooling.

If a store is already planning to replace its refrigerated cases, it’s a good idea to purchase new cases with doors. Replacing the entire case is more expensive than a simple retrofit, but new cases come with LED lighting and high-efficiency fan motors, which adds up to greater monthly savings.

Finally, don’t forget to address the efficiency of the back end of your refrigeration system. Your refrigeration compressor or condensing unit can be found on the roof or in a dedicated compressor rack in a back storage area. Newer compressors tend to be smaller and more efficient and need less horsepower to provide the same amount of cooling.

Six signs that your refrigeration isn’t working properly

    Look for Energy STAR equipment

Grocery stores that sell prepared food have ovens, steam cookers, commercial refrigerators, and other kitchen equipment on hand. When it’s time to replace the equipment, look for Energy STAR certified models.

  • Energy-Saving Tips for Office Buildings

    /office-buildings

Whether your company rents or owns its space, there are plenty of opportunities to save energy in an office building while improving employee comfort and safety.

Choose LEDs and use sensors and controls.

Lighting accounts for about a fifth of the total energy use of a commercial building,[1] making LEDs an excellent way to cut costs. Meanwhile, the longer lifespans of LEDs reduce the maintenance time required to replace burnt-out bulbs.

Thoughtfully installed efficient lighting can also improve employee productivity and safety. Lighting design factors in the operation of your business to provide appropriate lighting where it is needed and less light where it isn’t required.

Lighting controls and sensors reduce energy use when employees aren’t occupying certain areas, or fewer employees are in the office. You can also install occupancy sensors on vending machines and other specialty equipment to ensure they only light up when someone walks by. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, installing occupancy sensor lighting controls in office spaces can save between 10 and 50 percent on energy costs.

    Purchase energy-efficient equipment.

Offices use a lot of audio/visual equipment, computers, displays, printers, and other electronics. While the energy consumed by one laptop may not amount to much, the cost of powering an office full of electronics can add up over time.

Whenever possible, invest in ENERGY STAR-certified products, which are independently certified to meet strict energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

    Avoid blocking thermostats or sensors.

Office managers need to account for many variables when establishing an office layout. One important aspect is to make sure that equipment isn’t too close to sensors and thermostats.

Avoid placing large equipment in front of thermostats. The waste heat given off by a heavily used printer or copier can trigger a falsely high room temperature. The heater may not kick in when needed, leaving building occupants too cold.

Another tip is to avoid placing equipment or furniture in front of light or ventilation sensors. Doing so may prevent the sensor from detecting when someone has entered or exited the room.

Pay attention to heating and cooling zones.

No matter how high-tech the building, there’s always that one room that is too stuffy or cold. Avoid this issue by monitoring temperatures and complaints about specific areas and how they map to the building’s heating and cooling zones.

In some cases, heating and cooling zones are mapped to multiple rooms, such as a conference room and a supply closet. Make sure that the most used room controls the zone. For instance, a conference room that is heavily utilized should take precedence over a supply closet that is barely opened.

    Discourage personal heaters and appliances.

If people use space heaters under their desks, personal fridges, or coffee makers, address the root problem. Personal appliances in office spaces aren’t just energy hogs—they can also be a fire or electrical hazard. Space heaters can overheat a space or trip a breaker, wiping out power for everyone until a facilities person can repair the damage.

Adjust the temperature until most people feel comfortable if a room is too cold. If five people have a mini-fridge under their desks, consider installing a communal fridge, which will use far less energy (especially if it is an ENERGY STAR-certified model).

    Coordinate work-from-home days.

These days, many offices have introduced hybrid work schedules that allow employees to work from home a few days a week. Lighting, heating, or cooling a big space for just one or two employees can be a big waste of energy.

Consider asking employees to work in the same area or try to have everyone work from home on the same days. By coordinating the days that employees use the space, you can set back or increase temperatures and turn lights off to save energy while no one is in the office. You can also consider increasing desk task lighting, which gives employees the option of only lighting their work area rather than an entire office if only a handful of employees are in the building at one time.

    Shut equipment off automatically.

Laptops go into power-saving mode when they are shut, and most other modern office equipment includes a power-saving mode. However, if several people in your office have desktop computers, their monitors can still waste a lot of energy overnight.

One solution is to use smart power strips. These strips include a master outlet that should be connected to each employee’s main computer power cord. When the employee powers down for the day, the strip automatically turns off their monitor and other desk electronics.

    Air seal your entrance space.

If you live in a cold climate, make sure that your office entrance space includes a vestibule or air curtain. Vestibules trap outside air before it can flow into your main office space. However, they take up a lot of space and can be expensive to install.

A more efficient and affordable option is to install an air curtain. These machines blow controlled air to create an air seal that keeps heat in and chilly outside air where it belongs.

    If you are a tenant…

Don’t chalk up high energy bills to the cost of doing business. Read your commercial lease carefully—ideally before you sign or renew—and monitor your building expenses, particularly if you pay for utilities.

Even if your property owner pays your energy bills, it may still be worth having a conversation. Energy-efficient improvements could lower the owner’s bills while improving productivity and comfort for your employees.

    If you own your building…

Did you know that ENERGY STAR-certified buildings have higher rental and occupancy rates and cost $0.54 less per square foot to operate?[2] Reduce maintenance time and operating costs, and improve tenant satisfaction by investing in a more energy-efficient building.
