10 Free Ways to Save Energy in Your Home

Saving energy doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. With just a few quick steps, you can reduce your electric usage and stay comfortable, all without spending a dime. 

Here are 10 easy, no-cost ways to start saving energy at home.

1. Adjust your thermostat. Set your thermostat just a few degrees higher in the summer and lower in the winter can lead to significant savings over a year.
2. Turn lights off.  Get into the habit of turning off lights whenever you leave a room. This simple step can add up.  
3. Use curtains and shades. Close your curtains or shades at night to keep out the cold during the winter. Close them during the day in the summer to block out extra heat.  
4. Run ceiling fans correctly. Run your ceiling fan clockwise during colder months to push warm air down, and counterclockwise in the summer for a cool breeze. This can help you adjust your temperature by a few degrees without sacrificing comfort.
5. Unplug electronics when not in use. Unplug electronics and small appliances that aren’t used often. These items sometimes continue to use power even when turned off.
6. Wash in cold water. Switch to washing your clothes in cold water. This can cut your clothes washer’s energy use in half while keeping your clothes just as clean.
7. Clean the lint filter. Clean the clothes dryer lint filter after each use. It improves air circulation and reduces the time it takes to dry clothes.
