  • 7 Easy Ways to Keep Your Home Cool This Summer

    /media-room/7-easy-ways-to-keep-your-home-cool-this-summer

Staying cool in the summer can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Try these easy cooling tips to stay comfortable all summer long without breaking the bank.

    1. Preserve cool air. Add weatherstripping or spray foam to drafty parts of your home. You’ll keep more of the cool air inside and the warm air outside.
    2. Give your AC system a checkup. Your AC system is a lot like you: It needs an annual checkup to confirm things are running smoothly. Clean the filters, dust the refrigerant coils, and call an HVAC technician if anything seems to be malfunctioning.
    3. Upgrade to a smart thermostat. Smart thermostats keep your space at the perfect temperature when you’re home and then dial back the cooling when you’re away. You know what that means: cha-ching! Lower energy bills. The cherry on top? There are several models available for under $100.
    4. Throw open your windows at night. When the outdoor temperature cools off, open your windows to get some circulation. Building scientists call this passive cooling strategy “night flushing.” Make sure to close the windows before it gets too hot in the morning.
    5. Close your blinds during the day. It’s amazing how much cool air your home can retain simply by keeping out the warmth of the sun.
    6. Make sure your ceiling fans are moving in the correct direction. In the summer, your fan should spin counterclockwise to push down a refreshing breeze.
    7. Upgrade your pool pump. Splish, splash! Your pool pump works hard to keep your pool clean and fresh. But is it working too hard? Consider installing a variable frequency drive (VFD) pump to save money on energy. It’ll be a great conversation starter at your next pool party.

  • 7 Ways for the Lodging Industry to Reduce Energy Costs

    /lodging

In the lodging industry, guest comfort and satisfaction are paramount. At the same time, saving money on operational costs can go a long way for your business. Hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts can get the best of both worlds by implementing a range of energy efficiency practices.

Check out these tips to reduce your energy use and save money while keeping your guests happy.

    Do an energy treasure hunt

Your business probably has dozens of opportunities to save money by reducing energy use. But do you know where to look? ENERGY STAR has a comprehensive checklist that can guide your way.

Efficiency Smart is also available to help your business discover additional ways to save energy and help prioritize your energy efficiency opportunities.

Up the efficiency in your guest rooms

Your guests likely only stay a night or two, so it's important to make it as easy as possible for them to conserve energy in the room. Here are some things to pay attention to:

    1. Turn down the heating/cooling during the day. For rooms with manual heating and cooling, make sure your housekeeping staff adjusts the temperature between guests, in addition to closing the blinds in the summer and opening them in the winter for added temperature regulation. For rooms with smart thermostats, use temperature setbacks during the day when the room is unoccupied. Another option is to use occupancy sensors to control the thermostats.
    2. Turn off the lights during the day. Some hotel rooms require guests to insert their keycard to control the lights. Another low-cost option is putting a sign on the back of the door reminding guests to turn off the lights when they leave. You can also ask your housekeeping staff to turn off the lights when they’re done cleaning a room.
    3. Use efficient appliances and lighting. If your guest rooms have appliances like mini fridges and televisions, make sure you purchase ENERGY STAR-rated models when it’s time to replace them. Make sure to also use LED lights throughout the room.

    Maintain your HVAC system

It's a lot cheaper to maintain your HVAC system than to replace it. Regular maintenance of your building's HVAC system will keep your space comfortable and ensure that your equipment lasts longer. Here are some things to keep an eye on:

    1. Change your air filters regularly. When filters are clogged, your HVAC system uses more energy to do the same amount of heating or cooling.
    2. Make sure your condensing unit fins are running smoothly. This is especially important if you've recently had a hail storm or other extreme weather that could damage the fins.

Check out more of our HVAC energy-saving tips

Make your public spaces work smarter, not harder

Do you offer amenities like a pool, a workout room, or a business center? If so, here are some common energy-saving opportunities:

    1. The pool: Make sure your pool has a variable-speed pump. These nifty devices ramp up and down based on your settings, unlike traditional pool pumps which run continuously at high speed. Look for ENERGY STAR-certified products.
    2. The business center: While your guests are getting a good night's sleep, your computers and printers can, too. Use smart power strips so that when one item on the strip is off, they're all off. You can also remotely implement sleep mode on all computer stations during certain hours.
    3. The workout room: Just because your guests are working hard doesn't mean your building should be. First things first: Install an occupancy sensor that turns on the lights when someone's in the room. Make sure it's strategically placed in an area with visibility to all the workout spaces, so that it doesn't accidentally turn off while someone's working out. You can also install a smart power strip that turns off all the workout equipment when one item on the strip is off. Make sure televisions have sleep timers so they turn off after inactivity.
    4. Vending and ice machine room: When your guests are grabbing a late-night snack or a bucket of ice, they need to be able to see. But the rest of the time, there's no harm in keeping the lights off. This is a great space for an occupancy sensor that turns on the lights when it senses motion. When it's time to upgrade your equipment, look for ENERGY STAR-rated vending machines and ice machines.
    5. Restrooms: Automatic faucets are an easy way to reduce water use and water heating costs.
    6. Parking lot: Guests often arrive at night. You can help them get into the building quickly and safely with LED parking lot lights and exterior lighting. LEDs can reduce your energy use by up to 40 percent, and they last up to four times longer than other models, so you'll save a good chunk of change in the long run. Plus, LEDs provide better lighting for security cameras, so you'll get some additional peace of mind.
    7. Lobby and hallways: Make sure that your hallways and lobby are lit with LED lighting.

    Plan for kitchen upgrades

Does your facility offer a hot breakfast or serve meals and snacks throughout the day? When it comes to saving energy, commercial kitchens are a gold mine of opportunity. Energy-efficient refrigerators cost less to run, and they're more reliable too, which helps keep your food fresh longer. Another worthwhile investment is an occupancy sensor for your range hood, so the hood only runs when something's cooking.

Check out more of our tips to lower energy costs in your kitchen.

    Wash linens more efficiently

Your guests might not need their linens washed daily. You can give guests the option to have their linens washed daily, every other day, or once a week. Just put a little card in the bathroom explaining how your guests can indicate their choice, for example, by leaving towels on the floor. Then, when it comes time to upgrade your commercial washing machine, keep an eye out for an ENERGY STAR-rated machine.

Don't forget the stairwells and elevators

Your guests need to get around the hotel safely and comfortably. In the stairwells, consider a multi-stage occupancy sensor that maintains the lights at a lower level until someone enters, at which point the lights go up to full brightness. If you're building a new hotel, consider an efficient elevator with regenerative drives that store extra energy when descending to reuse during the ascent. If you want to get even more sophisticated, you can implement advanced controls that prevent the elevator from returning to the ground floor unnecessarily; it will just wait on the most recent floor until it's summoned elsewhere.

  • What You Need to Know About Air Purifiers

    /Air_Purifiers

Have you ever noticed your home feeling a little stuffy? Maybe you’re sneezing more than usual while indoors?

Airborne particles such as dust and pollen can sneak into your home, especially during allergy season. Air purifiers are designed to filter out these fine particles and release clean air back into your home.

Whether you're shopping for your first air purifier or optimizing one you already have, here’s what you need to know:

Know the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR)

Air purifiers are meant to filter air in a single room, so look for a model that is sized appropriately for the room you plan to use it in. An oversized air purifier leads to higher energy use and more frequent air filter replacements than what is necessary.

You can find the right size by checking a model’s CADR rating. This measures the performance of the air purifier and how quickly it pumps out filtered air. The higher the CADR number, the larger the room it can maintain.

Measure out the square footage of the room where the purifier will be used most often and align it with the CADR sizing chart. This can provide a helpful estimate of what model will work best for your needs.

If dust is a concern in your home, choose a purifier that has a high dust CADR.

Understand Air Changes per Hour (ACH)

Manufacturers sometimes list a unit’s ACH, which estimates how often the air purifier cycles the air in a room in an hour.  The EPA suggests an ACH of right around 4.8 or slightly higher for best results, meaning it will refresh the air nearly five times per hour.  Be cautious of choosing an air purifier that has a much higher ACH rating than this, as it can lead to excess energy consumption with minimal added benefits.

    Search for ENERGY STAR-Certified Models

Air purifiers that are ENERGY STAR certified save 27% more energy than standard models while filtering the air just as effectively. This means savings on your electric usage without compromising air quality.

     Run Your Unit Efficiently

Once you have chosen an air purifier, you can reduce its energy use by following these tips:

    Optimal Placement

Place the air purifier in a central spot away from walls and large objects to allow for easy airflow.

    Keep the Filter Clean

Check and change the filter as directed in the instruction manual. A clean filter is key to optimal performance.

    Adjust Fan Speed

Many air purifiers offer an auto-setting to adjust fan speed based on air quality.  For manual models, consider keeping the fan speed lower for smaller rooms to minimize energy use.

    Close Windows and Doors

Keep doors and windows closed to prevent new airborne particles from entering your space. This will make it easier for your air purifier to effectively filter the air.

  • Are Your Motors Energy Efficient?

    /motors

Motors are built to last, with many of them remaining in operation for decades. But how much are they contributing to your electric bill? If your motor is older than 20 years, the answer is probably a lot.

Since motors last such a long time, the most efficient models will save more—sometimes much more—over the lifetime of the motor. According to the US Department of Energy’s sourcebook for improving motor and drive system performance, a motor’s purchase price represents just two and a half percent of its overall cost, with its electricity consumption accounting for the rest.

For this reason, it’s important to evaluate the lifetime energy cost of a motor, rather than its purchase price only.

Here are more tips on how to save energy and money on your motors.

    Rewound motors are less efficient

When motors fail, companies usually scramble to minimize production delays. In some cases, they can choose whether to replace the motor or rewind it.

Rewinding the motor may seem like an efficient use of resources, as it will likely operate more efficiently than it did before it failed. However, it will still perform less efficiently (by approximately one to two percent) than it did when new, and much less efficiently compared to a modern, new motor.

If you can avoid using the machine or system while you get a new motor, it’s usually worth it. You’ll save substantially over the life of the replacement motor compared with rewinding the old one.

Upgrade electric motor efficiency when it's time for motor replacement

Nine out of ten times, manufacturers replace a failed motor with the same model they had before. This could be a substantial energy efficiency gain since new motors are much more efficient.

However, it’s worth asking your supplier if they have a more efficient replacement available. The minimal cost difference will quickly pay for itself.

For those looking to go above and beyond toward operational savings or decarbonization goals, consider replacing your motors with higher-efficiency models. These “super-e” motors are more expensive than standard models but are certified to perform above the energy efficiency standard set by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).

Use smart controls to reduce energy use and increase savings

Motor controls do one of three things: turn the motor on, turn it off, or slow it down. In an industrial setting, there is almost always an opportunity to use controls to reduce a motor’s energy use and its wear and tear.

For example, if a facility has a conveyor belt running constantly, they can set up a control using a trip lever to stop the conveyor belt when there isn’t a product on it. This simple motor control helped one Efficiency Smart customer achieve 50 percent savings on the energy usage of the conveyor system.

Another example is a cooling tower, which lowers the temperature of water by blowing air across it with a fan. When it is fifty degrees outside, businesses don’t need their fans to run full bore to cool the water. Instead, they can install variable frequency drives to run their cooling tower fans at different speeds based on outside air temperature.  You can similarly consider adding a variable frequency drive to pumps and fans in HVAC applications.

Please note: There are instances where installing a variable frequency drive on motors can slow them down. Reach out to Efficiency Smart to identify whether a control is appropriate for your motor application.

    Consider replacing smaller, constantly-running motors

Motors that use less than one horsepower may be good candidates for electronically commutated motors (ECMs). Two good examples are refrigeration and fan coil units, such as those found in hotel HVAC systems or at grocery and convenience stores.

Because many of these smaller fan motors run all the time, replacing them with ultra-efficient ECMs can easily halve their energy consumption.

If your home uses a heat pump, set the thermostat at a moderate temperature and leave it there. Heat pumps are most efficient at a consistent temperature.
    • Limit the Use of Space Heaters: Reduce or eliminate the use of electric space heaters, as they are one of the least efficient ways to heat your home. Electric space heaters are less efficient than HVAC systems, and only heat a small portion of a home. If you are using a space heater, make sure it is designed to heat the size of room it’s used in, and look for one with thermostat and timer settings to save energy and prevent overheating.
    • Maintain Your HVAC System: Clean or change your furnace filters regularly. A dirty furnace filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep your home warm, which will cost you more money. If it has been a few years since a technician last looked at your system, consider calling a professional to service or tune-up your unit to keep it running as efficiently as possible.
    • Look for the Energy Star® label: Available across more than 70 product categories, the ENERGY STAR label makes it easy to find products that have been independently certified to use less energy. Save even more with Efficiency Smart’s rebates on eligible products.

  • Energy Efficiency Opportunities for Healthcare Facilities

    /healthcare

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, each dollar a nonprofit healthcare agency saves through energy efficiency equates to 20 dollars in revenue from patient care. That’s because hospital operating margins are slim compared to other industries. In 2024, the average operating margin has hovered between one and two percent.

While most energy efficiency projects require some initial investment, they pay for themselves over time. From there, any savings go directly to a hospital’s bottom line. Below, Efficiency Smart reviews four key ways healthcare operations teams can save on energy. Many of these projects also deliver additional benefits, such as improving the experience of patients and staff.

    1. Patient spaces

Because hospitals are always open, efficient lighting and good lighting design can dramatically reduce energy bills while improving occupant comfort. Manual lighting controls can be programmed to switch LEDs on or off or move from dim to full strength. However, automatic lighting controls, such as occupancy sensors, should only be used in specific circumstances in patient care areas.

Improving the efficiency of ventilation systems can also yield savings. However, operations staff need to prioritize air pressure specifications above energy efficiency, especially in spaces like operating rooms that require positive air pressure. When making changes that affect the amount of air in a room, staff and vendors should predetermine the pressure relationships between project areas and surrounding rooms to avoid issues. Many hospitals hire a vendor to perform an air balance to ensure that pressure relationships are maintained during energy or construction projects.

For heating (steam and/or hot water) and cooling, hospitals have a year-round need for both. Tools and equipment must be sanitized in steamers and cleaners, while patient rooms include showers. Installing heat recovery systems on chiller plants (see section on central chiller plants) saves energy and money by repurposing preconditioned water for other applications. Certain applications could even consider a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system.

    1. Administrative spaces and medical offices

Administrative spaces are used differently than patient areas and are often vacant on evenings and weekends. For this reason, the savings associated with lighting retrofits in office spaces aren’t as dramatic as in patient areas. However, installing lighting controls such as occupancy sensors and daylighting can result in additional savings.

Heating, cooling, and ventilation (HVAC) efficiency projects can also yield significant savings since staff can set back temperatures and air changes when no one is working.

Medical offices, which are also closed on nights and weekends, are another good candidate for HVAC efficiency projects and controls. Be sure to refer to ventilation standards for medical buildings, per ASHRAE 170 ventilation requirements for healthcare facilities.

    1. New construction and renovation

One of the best ways to improve energy efficiency in a hospital setting is to write the organization’s construction standards to build to the most current energy standards, even if they have not yet been adopted in your state’s energy code.

Hospitals are owned and managed for decades, which means they can invest in renovations with longer payback periods. Establishing and maintaining energy efficiency requirements for new construction and renovation can help ensure that lighting, HVAC, building shell, and specialty equipment are purchased and programmed to perform efficiently and effectively.

During renovations, it’s also worth considering transitional spaces. For example, if one hall is updated with new LED lighting, consider the spaces adjacent to prevent jarring visual differences for employees and patients.

Finally, as spaces are repurposed, make sure they are not over or under-ventilated. Patient care spaces require higher ventilation rates than non-patient care spaces, and this can result in dramatic swings in energy use.

    1. Central plants

A chiller/boiler water plant generates the energy a hospital needs to heat and cool all the buildings on its campus, so it’s a great place to look for energy efficiency opportunities.

Chillers rarely run at their peak loads and some of the largest savings can come from part load efficiency. For existing equipment, this may mean installing variable frequency drives, optimizing the staging of equipment (especially in modular systems), or driving down condenser water temperatures during cooler weather. When selecting new equipment, you should prioritize the integrated part load value (IPLV) or the non-standard part load value (NPLV) over the peak kW/ton rating.

When selecting a new or retrofit system, the most efficient system may not come in a single package. A modular system will interconnect a series of smaller units to better match the building load at non-peak conditions. Modular systems can also be scaled as hospitals add or renovate buildings, as each module is smaller and can be transported to an existing mechanical room.  Heat recovery technology should also be considered, as these systems save energy by repurposing waste heat for other building needs, such as sterilization and water heating.

Other energy efficiency opportunities can include installing variable frequency drives (VFDs) on all pumps and motors, including cooling tower fan motors. Installing VFDs minimizes energy use by ensuring that your machinery works only as hard as it needs to at any given time. Finally, existing spaces should move away from pneumatic controls to direct digital control (DDC) systems.  They are more versatile, programmable, and responsive, and do not require the use of compressed air to operate.

  • Maximize the Benefits of Your Smart Thermostat

    /thermostat

The average American household spends more than $900 annually on heating and cooling costs. You can upgrade to a smart thermostat to lower these costs while staying comfortable in your home.

Smart thermostats are all about giving you more control over your home’s heating and cooling system and helping it run more efficiently. Follow these tips to get the most out of your smart thermostat.

    1. Use Scheduling Features

Smart thermostats can adjust heating and cooling settings around your occupancy schedule. This lets you adjust the temperature while you are away from home and return it to a more comfortable temperature ahead of your return. Many thermostats will also learn your preferences and occupancy habits over time.

    1. Try Auto-Away Settings

Do you have an unpredictable schedule that makes it difficult to program your thermostat? Most smart thermostats come with geo-fencing features that can determine when you are away from home based on your smartphone’s location and automatically adjust the temperature accordingly.

    1. Review Energy Insights

Many smart thermostats provide a monthly summary of your energy use. These insights can highlight opportunities for even more energy and cost savings.

    1. Take Advantage of Remote Accessibility

Did you forget to adjust the temperature before you left on vacation? Do you want to adjust the temperature without getting up from your comfortable couch? Smart thermostats let you enjoy the convenience of controlling your thermostat from anywhere with an internet connection.

    1. Bonus Features:

Smart thermostats offer additional benefits, such as reminders to replace your furnace filter or alerts for any issues with your HVAC system. You can even use your smart thermostat to monitor power outages and internet issues while away from home by seeing if your thermostat is online and connected through your app.

    1. Use Temperature Setbacks Correctly

If you use a heat pump for heating, avoid schedule or location-based temperature adjustments during the winter. Heat pumps work more efficiently when maintaining a consistent temperature setting. Lowering the temperature while you are away can make your heat pump switch to auxiliary heating mode once you return the temperature to your normal setting.  In auxiliary mode, a heat pump uses its inefficient electric heating coil, potentially nullifying any energy savings and even increasing consumption.

    1. Check Device Compatibility

ENERGY STAR-certified smart thermostats are compatible with most HVAC systems, especially with forced air HVAC systems that were installed after 1975. However, it’s always a good idea to check the smart thermostat’s website or contact your HVAC system manufacturer to verify compatibility prior to purchasing.

Efficiency Smart offers a $100 rebate on the purchase of a new smart thermostat. You can also purchase a smart thermostat with our discounts already included in the purchase price through our Online Savings store.

  • Seven DIY Tips to Save Energy and Stay Warm

    /Winter-DIY

There's nothing better than feeling warm and cozy in your home—except saving energy and money while doing it. The good news? You can achieve both with simple, affordable steps that don’t require much effort or hiring a professional. Here are seven energy-saving tips you can try this winter to make your home more efficient and comfortable.

    Weatherize Doors

Can you see sunlight peeking through the sides or bottom of your front or back door? If so, cold air is likely sneaking in while your heated air escapes.

    Seal the gaps by:

    • Adding weatherstripping around the doorframe
    • Installing a door sweep at the bottom
    • Sealing between the threshold and the floor

If you have an attached unheated garage, don’t forget to weatherize the door leading to your home as well.

    Weatherize Windows

Windows are another source of drafts, especially older ones. Two easy steps you can take are adding weatherstripping around the sides and applying plastic around them to stop drafts.

    Learn more about weatherstripping

    Insulate Outlets and Switches

Do you feel a draft near your outlets or light switches? If so, they may not be insulated properly. Pre-cut foam gaskets can fix this. Simply:

    • Unscrew the outlet or switch cover.
    • Press the foam gasket around the opening.
    • Reattach the cover.

    Change Furnace Filters

A clean furnace filter will keep your unit running efficiently while reducing the effort it takes to heat your home. This means it’s important to swap your filter out when it’s dirty, or at least once every three months at a minimum. A dirty air filter can also cause your system to shut down, which is a surprise no one wants in the middle of winter.

    Use Your Ceiling Fans

It may seem counterintuitive, but a ceiling fan can be used in the winter to save energy. Set your ceiling fan to run clockwise so it can pull heated air from the ceiling down towards you.  This makes you feel warmer without having to raise the thermostat.

    Program your thermostat

If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, use it to adjust temperatures around your schedule. You can set it lower while you are sleeping and away from home, and have it set to warm up your house when you wake up or before you return home.

Note: If you have a heat pump, avoid temperature setbacks. Heat pumps work best when you set the temperature at a consistent and comfortable temperature and leave it there.

Install Heavy Curtains or Thermal Drapes

It’s a good idea to open your drapes and curtains on south-facing windows during the day to let in natural warmth from the sun.

Nighttime is a different story. Close all curtains or drapes and consider using heavy curtains or thermal drapes, which can cut heat loss by up to 10%.

Learn more about efficient window coverings

Bonus Tip: Close Your Fireplace Damper When Not in Use

Fireplaces add warmth and ambiance, but an open damper can let warm air escape. Don’t forget to close the damper after the fire is extinguished and the ashes have cooled to reduce heating loss.

  • Five Low-Cost Ways for Businesses to Save Money on Energy

    /media-room/five-low-cost-ways-for-businesses-to-save-money-on-energy

Energy efficiency is good for business. Spending less on energy means more money for your bottom line, and improving your energy efficiency doesn’t require big upfront costs. Here are five low-cost things you can do to start saving energy at your business.

Put your building to sleep at night

Do you know what your building is doing overnight and on the weekends? You might assume all the lights are off and the thermostats are programmed around business hours, but it turns out that a lot of buildings aren't optimized for the off hours. One company that Efficiency Smart worked with thought all its equipment was turned off over the weekend, when in fact it was all still on. The company saved $10,000 a year on energy costs just by making sure everything was properly turned off.

Here are a few key things you can do to reduce energy consumption when your building is vacant:

    1. Make sure your computer equipment is off or sleeping. You can use smart power strips so that when one item on the strip is off, they're all off. If you have an IT department, it can remotely implement sleep mode on all computer stations during certain hours.
    2. Install a light logger or an occupancy logger. These tools provide data on your building's after-hours lighting. They can also show trends in certain rooms, like if the lights are always on in the mechanical room but it's only occupied a few times a week. Equipped with that data, you can decide whether it makes sense to install an occupancy sensor (which automatically turns off the lights when it hasn't detected movement in a certain amount of time) or something like a twist timer (which keeps the lights on for a set amount of time).
    3. Set back the thermostat. You can use a building automation system or a smart thermostat to record your building's actual temperature on nights and weekends. This data will help you determine whether you need to make any adjustments. If your building uses a heat pump, your temperature setbacks should be less dramatic than a traditional heating system. That's because heat pumps are designed to maintain a more stable temperature, and they use a lot of electricity to get back up to temperature if they've been set too low.

Efficiency Smart can help investigate your building’s after-hours electricity use. We can install light loggers and review advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data to help you get a better sense of what’s happening when you’re not there.

    Create a culture of efficiency

The businesses that are most successful at reducing energy costs have one thing in common: they create employee buy-in. Enlisting your employees to help reduce energy use ensures that your efficiency efforts reach each corner of the business. Your employees might also have some unique and effective energy-saving ideas based on first-hand knowledge of their work.

Each department can contribute to the culture of efficiency. For example, the procurement department might update its standards to ensure that all new office equipment is ENERGY STAR rated or that all new lighting is LED. You can create "energy champions" and have a competition between departments or buildings to see who can use the least amount of energy in a given time period. You can also encourage nighttime security or custodial staff to shut off lights and report any equipment they notice running during off hours.

    Use all your free resources

Making your building more energy efficient shouldn't cost a fortune. You can use the free ENERGY STAR Treasure Hunt tool to identify areas of your building that are unnecessarily hogging a lot of energy. You might be surprised at what you find. For instance, what if your thermostat is hiding behind the copy machine? The thermostat might be getting pelted with hot air, so it thinks the building is warmer than it actually is. Or what if your air compressor is leaking, so it's turning on when no one's using it? The Treasure Hunt tool will help you find those sneaky issues that might be hiding in your building.

Efficiency Smart is also available to help your business discover additional ways to save energy and help prioritize your energy efficiency opportunities.

Beware of simultaneous heating and cooling

It's almost impossible to choose a building temperature that works for everyone. But you can get closer by trying some of these tips:

    1. Make sure all the windows are closed when the heat or air conditioning is running. If some employees have their windows open, it's a sign that the building is being over-cooled or over-heated.
    2. If your employees are using personal space heaters, it's a sign that you're over-cooling the building.
    3. If you use hot water for heating, make sure there are no water valves stuck open.
    4. If you have a loading dock, make sure the doors are sealed. If you can see sunlight coming through the door, it's very likely letting air inside. Also, keep these doors closed when not in use.
    5. Window shades or external awnings can help regulate your building's temperature. By welcoming in the sunshine in the winter, you'll use less energy on heat; by blocking some of the sunshine in the summer, you'll use less energy on air conditioning.

    Do regular HVAC maintenance

Maintenance isn't glamorous, but it could save your business a whole lot of money (and headaches) down the line. Regular maintenance of your building's HVAC systems will keep your space comfortable and ensure that your equipment lasts longer. Here are some key places to keep an eye on:

    1. Change your air filters on a regular basis. When filters are clogged, your HVAC system uses more energy to do the same amount of heating or cooling.
    2. Make sure your condensing unit fins are running smoothly. This is especially important if you've recently had a hail storm or other extreme weather that could damage the fins.

  • 7 Ways for Places of Worship to Reduce Energy Costs

    /media-room/7-ways-for-places-of-worship-to-reduce-energy-costs

Places of worship are as diverse as the congregations that gather in them. Churches, synagogues, and mosques come in different sizes and styles, and they were built in different eras. They weren’t often built with energy efficiency in mind.

There are many opportunities to save energy at your place of worship. With lower operating costs, your congregation will have more funds to fulfill its mission. Here are a few tips to get you started.

    Take a holistic approach

A church, synagogue, or mosque is a lot more than just a building. It's a community. It's also more than a building in the literal sense: Many places of worship have multiple buildings including a parsonage, a school, or maybe even a whole campus. When choosing your energy efficiency goals, it's valuable to take a big-picture approach. You might prioritize certain buildings or try to tackle a specific issue in each building. However you go about it, remember that each space is unique. You might have several kinds of HVAC systems, a variety of historical windows and doors, and other factors that will impact the specific efficiency options for each area. Efficiency Smart can help you determine cost-effective options.

    Create an HVAC maintenance plan

Many places of worship have a long history of renovations and additions. There are potentially newer parts of the building and older parts of the building, each with its own HVAC system. This can work to your advantage, because it creates natural "zones" for different levels of heating setbacks. Take an inventory of your HVAC equipment and plan for regular maintenance of each unit. When it comes time to replace a unit, you can look for high-efficiency options.

Air conditioning can be a little trickier in an old building like a church. It can be expensive and impractical to add central air conditioning. Ductless heat pumps are typically easiest. If you have a manual heating system, just make sure you're not accidentally heating and cooling simultaneously.

    See more HVAC tips

    Switch to LEDs where possible

Your place of worship might have architectural-style lighting. Replacing those specialty bulbs can be expensive, in addition to the hassle of climbing up to access them. If possible, switch to LEDs. The payback is twofold: You'll use a lot less electricity, and since LEDs can last up to four times longer than traditional bulbs, you'll reduce the number of trips up the ladder. If you have spotlights at the front of the sanctuary, replacing those with LEDs will keep the people up front cooler.

Review your lighting in hallways and offices for opportunities to upgrade. Don't forget the exterior lighting as well.  You can install LEDs in the parking lot, and if your building has exterior spotlights, make sure those are LEDs, too.

Efficiency Smart can provide incentives for qualifying LED upgrades to help you save even more.

    Utilize temperature and light setbacks

Temperature and light setbacks are one of the easiest ways for churches, synagogues, and mosques to save money on electricity. The sanctuary is occupied intermittently, making it a great candidate for a pre-programmed lighting and heating schedule. It will be nice and cozy during services without wasting heat during the rest of the week. For spaces like offices, classrooms, and restrooms, you can install occupancy sensors that automatically turn off the lights when the space is unoccupied.

    Weatherize the leaky spots

Many churches, synagogues, and mosques are historic buildings that have been unevenly insulated over the years. It might not make sense to do a large-scale weatherization project, but you can patch up the leakiest places. If you have a belltower, that's a great place to start. First, make sure the door or hatch is only open when the belltower is in use. Then, you can add a foam board to the doorway or hatch, and add weatherstripping around the edges for additional insulation. Next, see if the building's windows are letting cold air inside, and consider adding weather stripping to seal off the gaps.

    Draw on your congregation's skills

Maintaining your building can be a lot of work, but you probably have some hidden talent in your congregation. Just as you have a hospitality committee or a mission committee, consider a facilities committee that can help with efficiency projects. Members might enjoy volunteering their time and skills to help with electrical upgrades, HVAC maintenance, and more. In addition to volunteer support, you can ask your custodial staff to turn off lights that are accidentally left on overnight, and to report any parts of the building that are especially drafty.

Make it easy for guests to be efficient

Does your place of worship rent out space to other organizations like a daycare or a group meeting? Those people can help with your efficiency goals. You can make it easy by providing a checklist of things to do before they leave, like turning off the lights, turning down the heat, and pulling down the shades. You can also install smart power strips for spaces with a lot of electronics, like a recreational room.

The kitchen is another place that might be hogging a lot of energy. You might be using donated appliances that are old and inefficient. When possible, replace failing equipment with ENERGY-STAR certified models. You'll save a good chunk of energy, and qualifying models are eligible for Efficiency Smart’s incentives. Your hospitality committee will also appreciate the upgrade so they can better serve the congregation.

April 30, 2018 (CLAYTON, DELAWARE) –– The Town of Clayton, in partnership with the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation (DEMEC), is excited to introduce Efficiency Smart, an energy efficiency program for Town of Clayton electric customers.  DEMEC’s energy efficiency program, Efficiency Smart, offers rebates and several services designed to help residents and businesses reduce energy use.

Clayton is expected to save approximately 153 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy over the course of the three-year contract period. This is roughly equivalent to the annual electric usage of 17 homes.

The residential services available through the program include a comprehensive set of initiatives that promote sustainable efficient product use and increase energy efficiency in homes. This includes discounts on energy-efficient lighting, rebates for energy-efficient appliances and products, and a free meter loan service.

By taking advantage of these options, residents can reduce their energy consumption and save on their electric bills. For example, a resident who:

    • Replaces 10 of his or her most frequently used incandescent light bulbs with LEDs could save approximately $100 dollars in annual electric costs
    • Plugs appliances and electronics into an advanced powerstrip could save up to $100 in annual electric costs
    • Manages his or her electric usage with an advanced thermostat could save approximately $70 in annual electric costs

Business customers also have many ways to save energy and money.

Small to midsized companies that use up to 500,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy annually can receive quick and easy rebates for implementing common energy efficiency measures through Efficiency Smart’s Business Energy Rebates (BER) program. Example projects include lighting, compressed air, food service equipment, and HVAC.

Businesses that use more than 500,000 kWh of electricity annually have access to tailored services with dedicated account management, customized financial incentives and technical assistance through Efficiency Smart’s Custom program.

Many companies that have completed projects with Efficiency Smart have realized significant reductions in their energy consumption, often between five to 20 percent of their total energy use. These energy reductions have translated to cost savings for companies. Small business projects completed through Efficiency Smart to date have averaged more than $1,600 in annual energy cost savings while larger business projects have averaged in excess of $9,300 annually.

“We are excited for the opportunity to partner with the Town of Clayton in collaboration with DEMEC,” said Everett Woodel, executive director of Efficiency Smart. “The town has shown a commitment to energy efficiency, which is a very cost-effective way for communities to reduce their customers’ electric bills, reduce transmission and distribution costs, and contribute to local economic development. We look forward to working together with the city to ensure a successful partnership.”

  • Signs It Might Be Time to Replace Your Water Heater

    /WaterHeaterSigns

How often do you think about your water heater? If you are like most people, probably infrequently when it’s working great.

However, if you suddenly find yourself with only cold water in the shower, your water heater likely jumps to the top of your mind!

While water heaters can fail without warning, there are often signs you can look for that indicate it might be time to start planning for a replacement:

    • Visible Corrosion: Check for corrosion on the water lines or on the unit itself
    • Leaks: Look for leaks from seams, joints, or seals
    • Noises and Vibrations: Listen for loud rumbling noises or vibrations, which can be red flags
    • Insufficient Hot Water: Note if you are experiencing a shortage of hot water
    • Age: Review the age of your water heater, as they start nearing the end of their lifespan after ten years of use.

If any of the above sounds like your water heater, you might want to consider replacing your unit with a heat pump water heater. Water heating is typically the third-highest energy consumer in a home, making an energy-efficient heat pump model a smart choice for a replacement.

While the initial cost may be higher than standard models, heat pump water heaters make up the difference quickly. • Laundry Room Savings

    /laundry

Doing laundry can feel like a never-ending cycle. However, you can at least save energy and money while doing it.

Here are five ways you can clean up on energy savings while doing laundry:

    1. Wash with colder water:

According to ENERGY STAR, 90 percent of a clothes washer’s energy use comes from water heating. Washing in cold water is generally as effective unless you are dealing with oily stains. Even lowering the temperature from hot to warm can reduce energy use by nearly 50 percent.

    1. Maximize Clothes Washer Load Sizes:

Clothes washers use nearly the same amount of energy regardless of the number of items being washed. Using full loads not only saves energy but also reduces the number of laundry cycles you have to complete.

    1. Clean the lint filter after every use:

Make cleaning out the lint filter part of your post-dryer routine after every load. Not only will this improve air circulation and keep your dryer operating as expected, but it’s also an important fire safety step.

    1. Use lower heat settings in the dryer.

While it may seem counterintuitive, using lower heat settings in your dryer can save energy, even if it makes your drying cycle longer. It can also protect your clothes from over-drying.

    1. Choose ENERGY STAR-certified equipment.

When it's time to upgrade your appliances, pick ENERGY STAR-certified models. ENERGY STAR-certified clothes washers use 20% less energy and 30% less water than standard models. Meanwhile, ENERGY STAR-certified clothes dryers use 20% less energy. Efficiency Smart also offers $50 rebates on both items, helping you save even more

  • Get your HVAC System Ready For Cold Weather

    /media-room/get-your-hvac-system-ready-for-cold-weather

Believe it or not, winter will be here before you know it. As the temperature drops, the importance of keeping your home’s heating system in great shape rises.

Proper maintenance can help you stay warm this winter while saving you energy and money. Follow these tips to prepare your HVAC system for winter.

    Change your furnace filter

A clean furnace filter is important for improving indoor air quality and keeping your system running efficiently. Replacing a dirty filter reduces the strain on your system, so be sure to change it when it’s dirty, or at least every three months.

    Consider a smart thermostat

Installing a smart thermostat is a great choice for your home. Many smart thermostats have learning capabilities to automatically adjust your home’s temperature around your sleep and occupancy habits, saving you energy and money. You can save even more money with Efficiency Smart’s $100 rebate on qualifying models.

    Schedule maintenance

Preventative maintenance keeps your HVAC system running smoothly, reduces the risk of costly repairs, and helps identify potential issues before they become major problems. Scheduling a check-up now might also help you avoid emergency repairs during the worst of winter.

    Consider an upgrade

If your HVAC system is nearing the end of its lifespan, consider replacing it before winter hits. Email or call Efficiency Smart at 877-889-3777 for expert advice on replacement options and information on available rebates.
