The City of Dover and DEMEC Introduce Efficiency Smart to Help Customers Save Energy and Money
July 9, 2025
The City of Dover, in partnership with the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation (DEMEC), is excited to introduce Efficiency Smart, an energy efficiency program for City of Dover Electric customers. Efficiency Smart offers several services and financial incentives to help residents and businesses reduce their electric use and save money.
“The City of Dover is proud to partner with Efficiency Smart through DEMEC, to provide our residents and businesses with the tools and resources they need to decrease their energy usage and reduce utility bills,” said Mayor Robin R. Christiansen. “This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability, economic efficiency, and improving quality of life for our community. Combined with the outstanding reliability and dedication of our electric utility crews, who work tirelessly to keep the power on and our systems running smoothly, this program helps position Dover as a forward-thinking, energy-conscious city prepared for the future.”
Efficiency Smart’s residential services are designed to lower electricity use and make homes more comfortable. Residential initiatives include free programs that provide guidance on reducing electric use and discounts and rebates on energy-efficient products.
Residents can use these services to reduce their energy consumption and save on their electric bills. For example, a resident could take advantage of these programs to:
- Receive personalized no-cost energy-saving tips, such as which direction to run their ceiling fan in the summer and winter to stay comfortable without adjusting the thermostat
- Reduce their electric bill by no longer running an older appliance and earn $100 for responsibly recycling it
- Replace an outdated window air conditioner at little to no cost by combining rebates on a new energy-efficient model with the appliance recycling incentive
- Manage their electric usage with a smart thermostat to save approximately $70 in annual electric costs
Business customers also have many ways to save energy and money. Efficiency Smart offers hands-on support, including technical assistance and financial incentives, to encourage the installation of energy-efficient technologies. Example projects include lighting, compressed air, and HVAC.
“We are excited for the opportunity to work with the City of Dover,” said Sean Clement, Director of Efficiency Smart. “The city has shown a commitment to energy efficiency, which is a cost-effective way for utilities to reduce their customers’ electric bills, reduce power supply costs, and contribute to local economic development. We look forward to working together with Dover to ensure a successful partnership.”
Dover is expected to save approximately 4,935 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy over the course of its three-year contract period. This is roughly equivalent to the annual electric usage of more than 787 homes. Reducing electric usage lowers costs for the city of Dover and its electric customers.
